Wreckage

I thought I was going to expel all my internal bodily fluids, but instead, I closed my eyes because I had no idea of what else to do. I expected to see Ellen standing in the doorway, piercing her eyes at us but she wasn’t there to greet us. Jake went inside first, then I stepped inside behind him and closed the door.

It smelled like old wood. The room was dark, but we had the light from our phones. There were photos mounted on the wall. Photos of me as a child, mother, and father throughout the years. There were also photos of all four of us together. I had never seen those before.

We proceeded further into the attic, toward the boarded-up window. Then, around the corner came Ellen. She was wearing the black jogger suit I ripped the night I got hung up on a rusty nail. I told Jake I had not seen that jogger set in a long time. Hopefully, he believed me now. Her long, black hair was hanging down her back. She looked tired. Rings around her eyes. Yet, she seemed happy, ecstatic even, to see me. She let off a smile while staring at me. I had waited a long time for this but nowhere near as long as she waited.

She reached her hand out, silently asking if it was okay to touch me. Her pale hand hovered over my face as I nodded yes. She touched my cheek, then shifted upward toward my scalp. She stroked my hair in awe, even though hers was exactly like mine. She grabbed my hand and guided me to her mane, where I rubbed my hands through the strands of her hair. She closed her eyes and savored the moment.

She fell into my arms and started sobbing. Her sobs were genuine and deep. I tried hard to hold back my tears. She needed someone to be strong for her.

She sobbed for a while before Jake said, “Ok, it is time to get what we came for. We need answers, but first, we need your name.”

She stopped crying and looked up at Jake. Her eyes were bloodshot red. She walked over to her corner bathroom and retrieved an old, shabby washcloth, which she offered to me. I dried her tears off my torso as we sat in a circle on the attic floor.

Ellen looked at Jake, then over at me, then at her fingertips. She let out three slow clicks while twiddling her fingers. She then started to explain, “I have waited my entire life for this. I never knew when I would get to meet you, what I would say, or how I would feel. I have known about you all my life and you have only known about me for a few weeks. My entire life, I was jealous of you. Jealous that you got the chance to live a normal life and I was stuck here, in the attic. Not understanding why we were treated differently even though we are alike in more ways than I could imagine.
